Dolores
French has been a prostitute for 26 years and has probably become
the world's most famous "working girl" as a result of her
passion for "The Business." She saw her first paying customer
on a lark at the age of 27 and has worked in locales as varied as
a Puerto Rican brothel, a window in Amsterdam, and the upscale Manhattan
boudoirs of "Mayflower Madam" Sydney Biddle Barrows. The
first prostitute to appear on a TV talk show (Phil Donahue) without
her face or voice hidden or disguised, Dolores helped organize the
Atlanta sex trade workers' guild HIRE (Hooking is Real Employment),
served on Mayor Andrew Young's Task Force on Prostitution in Atlanta,
and was a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control's study on
prostitution and AIDS. She published her autobiography "Working:
My Life as a Prostitute" in 1988.
